Posology Definition and Factors That Determining Dosage Quantity

Posology Definition

The medical science that determines the quantity of medicine or dose prescribed to the patients is termed Posology. The right amount of using the drug has very important to get the best of all results. The dosage may vary in many persons as their physical health, age, gender, disorder stage, and mental health, etc. Sometimes, a high or improper dosage results in complications. Therefore the dosage quantity should be perfect that cure your disease and no harm to health.

Factors That Determining Dosage Quantity

Some most common intriguing factors need to be great attention to when determining the quantity of dosage.

Age

Mostly the actual drug dosage is determined for adults, and for Children and Seniors, it reduces from the actual dosage. Saint Sharangdhar suggested a partial dosage usage in their text scripts as below:

For one month Kid, the dosage should not be more than 125mg. After that, with every exceeding one month the dosage should be increased 125mg every till 1year. So, this formula results in a 1.5gm dose amount for a year kid. Further, from 1year to 16 exceeding years, the dosage quantity should be increase by 1gm every year. So, for 16 years kid, the dosage volume is about 16gm. This dosage is for powder and paste form of herb medicine.
Modern health scientists gave some certain formulas to determine the dosage quantities in the kids.

(a) Young’s Formula

Dosage for Kid = Total Amount of Dosage*Age/Age+12

For Eg for a 1year Child, the dosage would be calculated as
=1*1/1+12
=1*1/13
=1/13
So, the total dosage, 13th portion uses for the 1-year child.

(b) Cowling Formula

Total Amount of Dos *Age+1/24

According to this rule, for the 1-year kid, the dosage would be
=1*1+1/24
=1*2/24
=1/12

(c) Dilling’s Rule

=Age/20

So, for the 1 year, the dosage amount is 1/20th part of the total dose.

Other Factors

Similarly, a partial dosage rule must be applied for weak compare to strong, same for females than males. Another, in the case of chronic disease, the high dosage is recommended while for simple, the partial dose is sufficient.
In the case of Idiosyncrasy (Natural intolerance) with drugs, no drugs are advised.

Absorption and Excretion

Some medications, that are absorbed quickly and excrete too late have the worst effects on the body. So, a low or fractional dosage is suggested. Like Marijuana medicines.

Patients, who suffer from mental conditions are needed great intention when determining medicine quantity.

Also, climate, time, drug form (Powder, Paste, Decoction, Oral Extract, Injections, and Pills, etc), drug nature, and route of drugs administration impact the Posology of medicines.

In conclusion, take a brief study of medication Posology for the most salutary health results.
